Leak at Pay Tel: 300K scans of driver’s licenses and other data exposed in public cloud

Colleagues, a cybersecurity alert:
Pay Tel stored an unencrypted Azure resource containing ~300,000 scans of driver’s licenses and other IDs; discovered by UpGuard researchers.
What happened:
- Storage contained photos with geotags, text messages, handwritten notes and financial records.
- UpGuard notified the company on May 7; access was closed a few days later; no confirmation of victim notifications.
- This is the second known incident in two years — a prior ransomware attack occurred.
Why it matters:
Customer data and locations were exposed to outsiders — risk to individuals and regulatory consequences.
