Android and iPhone Can Now Exchange E2EE Messages via RCS

Friends, a note from mobile communications: a beta rollout has begun for end-to-end encryption of messages between Android and iPhone.

TechCrunch reports E2EE for RCS is already available in beta on devices running current software. Historically, cross-platform SMS lacked E2EE: iMessage has been encrypted since 2011, Android Messages within its ecosystem since 2021. Encrypted threads will show a lock icon; the feature is rolling out in beta and is not yet universally available.

Why it matters: it reduces the risk of interception by hackers, state actors and platforms.
